How we work with AI
Puzzle Post is a word puzzle based on the news. Because we use both AI and news data to make it, we want to be open about how that works — and, just as importantly, about what we don't do. We think players and publishers should be able to see that we work carefully and with respect for other people's work.
Where our data comes from
We work with publicly available news data. From it we take a limited set of details — such as an article's headline, its author, and where to find it — and use those to build a puzzle.
What we show
For each puzzle we show three things:
- a derived puzzle word;
- a hint we generate ourselves, which points to the topic in a playful, descriptive way;
- a link to the original article on the publisher's site.
The hint is produced by our own system. It is a new description of the topic, not text taken from the article.
What we don't do
- We do not publish article text, summaries, or excerpts from publishers.
- We do not show anything that sits behind a paywall.
- We do not replace the original article. If you want to know more about the news behind a puzzle, we send you straight to the publisher.
How we use AI
We use AI to turn a news topic into a puzzle and a hint. The AI does not summarise articles and does not return source text; it makes something new — a word and a description — for you to play with. The journalist's original work stays with the publisher, and that's where we point you.
For publishers
We care about the interests of the publishers and journalists whose work makes the news our puzzles are based on. If you're a publisher and you'd prefer that we not refer to your publications, or you have a question about how we handle your source, please get in touch at contact@puzzlepost.nl — we'll sort it out.
Wrap up
We keep our approach and this page up to date as the technology and the agreements in the sector evolve. If you have questions or comments, we'd be glad to hear them.
Frequently asked questions
A good puzzle needs a clever, non-obvious clue. AI lets us turn a day's news into fresh puzzles and hints at the pace the news moves. It's a tool for making the game, not for reproducing anyone's reporting.
Not necessarily. A hint is a playful, AI-generated description, not a factual summary, so it can be loose or imperfect by design. For the real story, always follow the link to the original article. If you spot a hint that's wrong or out of place, let us know and we'll fix it.
No. We don't republish article text, and the puzzle and hint are newly generated each time rather than a stored copy of someone's writing. The aim is to point people toward the original, not to build a product out of it.
Yes, Puzzle Post is run as a product. That doesn't change how we treat sources: we still link back to the publisher, we don't reproduce their articles, and we don't replace what they offer. If you're a publisher with questions about this, please reach out.
We've built Puzzle Post to stay on the careful side of how news may be used: we work from publicly available data, we don't reproduce articles, and we link back to the source. We'd rather work with publishers than around them — so if you have concerns, the contact details above are the fastest way to reach us.
Email us at contact@puzzlepost.nl and we'll make sure we no longer refer to your publications.
